A year ago I bought a Paterson tank, a changing bag and a bottle of HC-110 syrup. About forty rolls later, here is what stuck.
Nothing special: a two-reel tank, a 500 ml graduated cylinder, a thermometer I trust, and a kitchen timer. Fixer and stop bath live in labelled bottles under the sink. The bathroom is the darkroom only for loading reels; everything else happens in daylight.
I settled on dilution B (1+31) from syrup and mix it fresh every time. For HP5 at box speed that is 5 minutes at 20 °C, agitating for the first 30 seconds and then 10 seconds every minute. For FP4 it is 9 minutes. I keep a small notebook with every roll, and the times above are the ones I actually use, not the ones from the chart.
Temperature matters more than anything else. Load the reels in the dark with your eyes closed until it is boring. Use a wetting agent and hang the film somewhere without dust. And scan at home only if you enjoy it — a lab scan of the good frames is often worth the money.
